the S.P.C.A. (Society

The Vancouver branch
has 10 shelters and was
established on May 3,
1898, making it over 100
years old! Two shelters are on
the North Shore, which are in
North Vancouver and West
Vancouver.

with their volunteer programs.

We visited the North
Vancouver shelter and asked
them if they were housing any
abused animals. It turned out
there was only one mistreated

and is very friendly but very
quict. While the other dogs
were barking very loudly when ..
they spotted = us,. - Max
remained — silent, limping -
towards the front of the cage
and hoping for a pat.

“Cruelty to animals is a
crime,” says the B.C. S.P.C.A.
Because they think this, the
S.P.C.A. have — Special
Provincial Constables under
the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals Act.

The West Vancouver
S.PR.C.A. caters mostly to
domestic animals; but if a wild
animal is injured, -they. will :
take it and nurse it back to
health and most likely return it
to the wild again. More cats
are put to sleep than dogs.
There are so many cats cvery-
where that it’s hard to. make.
them all as happy 3 as they could

Sometimes if 2g animal is
sick they will have tq be put to
sleep so they are put out of -
their pain. and -misesy. Also,
they. might be put to sleep if
they are too aggressive or hard
to handle. When this sort of
thing happens, it is always for
a good reason.

If you ever go on vacation
at any time of year, be sure io «
have your pets looked after
while you are away. Many pets
are found abandoned because:
people forgot or just didn’t
care about what happened to
them. The summer is the
busiest time of year for the
S.P.C.A. because of this. Look
after your pet!

Now that you know the
facts, here is how you can
help. Always treat your pets
with care and respect. Bo not
ever, ever hit your pets, even
when they are bad! Instead,
squirt a little water at them tu
show thera that you de not
want them.to continue their
bad behaviour. If you ever see
anyone abusing an animal,
report them to your local
S.P.C.A. shelter. It is illegal!

With the help of many peo- —
ples’ donations and support,
many animals will be granted
