The contest coincides with the annual Coho Festival, and a salm- on barbecue, beer garden and live entertainment will add to the festivities in the park. The contest will take place on the grassy area between the water and the railway tracks, the duck pond and the parking lot. The contest will start at 4 p.m. and at 5 pam. all flying kites will be judged. “The kites have to be fying.” Van Ageelen warns. The judges are members of the B.C. Kite Flying Association and West Van Lions Club. Awards of $25, funded by the West Van Lions Club, will be awarded for five categories: best homemade kite, most unique kite, largest kite, most colorful kite and highest flying kite. Van Agvelen said the contest is meant for children. ‘We are after young kids and for them to have fun with their parents,”’ he said, but no age limit is set. Van Aggelen, who used to build his own kites as a child, has some tips on home fabrication. A strip at the bottom of the kite as tail and a ground str- ing from the crossbar will complete the kite. Van Aggelen said next year the centest will be preceded by a kite making workshop. ‘'The real art in making a kite is that the kite is light enough but will nor rip,’ Van Aggelen said, adding that a lighter kite will fly higher.
