Gardening Tips

A Patch of Green: Lawn Care

While most of us love an
expanse of lush green lawn,
maintaining it can be a daunting
task. A good beginning is to have
your soil tested at a garden centre
if the pH is iower than 6.0, an
application of dolomite time
should be applied in the spring or
fall. Nitrogen is the primary
nutrient required by lawns and the
best approach to fertilizing is ‘little
and often’.An accepted strategy is
to top-dress with fine compost in
March and 8-6-4 fertilizer. Follow
this with monthly sprinklings of
nitropriils throughout the summer
and another application of 8-6-4 in
mid-August. Water in fertilizer
thoroughly. If your soil is heavy
clay or compacted, soil zeration
will be required; a garden fork can
be used cr a lawn aerator

Most of the common weeds
which invade our turf can be
controlled, if not eliminated, by
good mowing practices, good soil
fertility, proper watering, annual
aeration and thatch removal. Keep
your lawn at a height of 6-7 cm or
2 1/2 inches. This will reduce
weeds, help to prevent fungal
disease, and will make your grass’
more drought resistant as it
encourages stronger and deeper
root development. Mow frequently
with a sharp blade and leave the
clippings us mulch, to fertilize the
grass. Water turf deeply and
infrequently, only once the top 2
cm has dried out. By following
these practices you will be
rewarded with a dense carpet of
greea beneath your feet.
