Classroom spac needed in N Van | From page The additional money means that cight new class- roams can now be built for the school instead of the original plan to use two portables. “We're very pleased to get that news from Victoria. That will preclude the need for portables,” Bird said. Education Minister Paul Ramsey’s recent announce- ment calls for a 50% reduc- tion in the use of portable classrooms around — the province over the next five years. Meanwhile, local school board representatives said they were pleased to be receiving a portion of the recently announced $17.7 million’ in provincial capital funding. ° North Vancouver District 44 will receive approximately $5 million and West Vancouver District 45 will reccive approximately $950,000 (in addition to the above noted $2 million) of the $17.7 million. The monies will go pri- marily into improving access to schools for the physically disabled. But North Vancouver's Handsworth secondary school will also get an addi- tion designed to accomnio- date 500 students. “T guess it’s great news, but we already knew it,” said North Vancouver School District 44 chairman. Pat Heal. “Ir was approved last year so it’s sore of smoke and nivrars.” Heal said Handsworth was a priority bur also emphasized the need to look at other Nerth Vancouver- area schools critically. “I would have liked to have seen them (the govern- ment) expand Seycove (sec- ondary),” she said. “And we've (also) got Capilano elementary (which) could really use an addition.” When asked what she thinks about the recent S2 million allocated to West Vancouver’s school district, Heal said she is hoping for the same kind of support for North Vancouver. “In some of the schools there are quite a few porta- bles,” she said. “We're cer- tainly not as bad off as some other districts.” Both Heal and Bird agree thac the portable classroom problem is not a big issue for | North Shore schools.
