} read the above articte of your
publication with a mixture of
amusement, anger -and___ pity.
Amusement because it is so far from
reality that it-is laughable; anger
because of the distorted, feeble argu-
ment that is allowed to appear ina
public newspaper; and pity because
of the naive, immature attitude that
scems to pervade our thinking here.

As a South African, I feel oblig-
ated to point out a few facts regard.
ing | this article:

1, Throughout the coverage of
the World Cup, focal viewers were
constantly given the impression that
the Canadian team were the sweet-
hearts of the event. The truth is that
they. simply received ‘a. traditional
African welcome — as did each of
the 16 teams.

2. Why can we not accept that
Canada is simply a secondary rugby
nation — improving fast of course
— but still an emerging nation in
this sport?

The truth is, Canada was never
going to beat the Springboks or the

Australians — alshough they put on”

“a spirited display — and that’s fine
because the experience gained was
the real point for the Canadians.

Mr. Kearney, your world ranking
of the Canadian team is as out of line
as the rest of your views on this
topic...

Current “world rankings must
have the top six as South Africa.
New. Zealand, England, France,

~ Australia and Scotland. Do you

think Canad could beat any of these:

3, Get the chip off your shoulder,

‘nations. with far; smaller,’ less

wealthy populations who have fewer
opportunities than local sportsmen,
who have produced talented and
successful rugby* teams, — West
‘Samoa, Tonga, Argentina and Fiji
are a few examples.

4, Stop thinking that black South
Africans: are eternally thankful tor
this country’s role in bringing an end
to apartheid. The reality is that sanc-
tions pushed the two countries so far
apart for so long ‘that neither nation
really has a clue about the other.

6. You! are also wrong in siting
that players from other nations are
professional and “don't need to
work at other jobs to support their
rugby habit” Tam sure the large
number of & ented players that have
had lo give up rugby at some point
to safeguard their future would take
serious issue with you on this.

Normally | would simply read an
article such as this and pass it off,
What is annoying and very. sad.
however, is that you have missed the
whole point. ‘The World Cup did
more to promote national unity and
to heal the terrible wounds from the
disease that was apartheid than any
recent political initiative.

The small-mindedness of this
article shows a remarkable lack of
understanding and sensitivity about
the South African situation. This is a
country that is trying to regain pride
and identity.

Lift. your vision, Mr. Kearney,
there is a big worid out there.
