eritage home restored THIS HERITAGE home stands across the street from the Williamson House, which L illustrated last Friday. NORTH SHORE HERITAGE Dorothy Foster Although it was built at the same time, and has a prominent curner location, its style is very different from its neighbor’s. It is a cottage with an unusual variation on-the late Craftsman style. The present owners, who purchased this home in 1981, have been working diligently on restoring if to the glory of bygone days. This house is a local modet of the Oregon branch (Lynton design) of the Craftsman styling. The new owners added stairs and restored the front to the original design. I've noticed this transforma- tion over the past few years as I've driven by. Some of the features of this home would include the tapered porch columns; the random ashlar stone foundation with arches below the porch, and the repeated arches above the front windows and door. Originally the house was built with a large loft, accessible by a home-made step ladder, that ran the length of the house. It now has stairs and a clear east to west attic or better, loft, with pained windows at each end. Not only has the outside been “restored but the kitchen and bath- - room have the 1920s Jook once more. One fine addition to the kitchen is the vintage Aga stove, with four ovens, which can heat the whole house. The fireplace has also been restored from.a modernization treatment that befalls many fire- places along the way. Even the hot house in the back yard echoes the style of the house. Clearly, restoring this home has been a labor of love for its owners, and they have done a fine job with the restoration. ~Thomas Hampton, the first ovner of this house, was a. brick- layer by trade and previously | lived in South Vancouver.
