Women in the ‘90s: the Choices and the Challenges is the theme of Taylor’s ambitious consumer trade show. a colorful lineup of exhib- its, seminars, pane! discussions, and celebrities at the Robson Square Conference Centre that will wrap up this evening (Sunday, June 2) at 6 p.m. More than 85 exhibitors at the show include the professions, the fashion industry, sports, banking and business, educational institu. tions, families and home care, tourism and self-help. Seminars and = lectures cover such women's issues as money, home-based computer businesses, car tips, relationships, power speaking and travel. What exactiy does a trade show producer do? “IT come up with an idea for a Jarge-scale event and each one takes 2 full year to put together. 1 have to attract the interest of a specific market segment of people and get them to a particular loca- tion. I have two full-time sales reps to reach businesses that will host exhibits.”’ Sponsors are vital — for the Women in the 90s show, Honda Canada has come on board with the Bank of B.C. division of the Hongkong Bank of Canada, and the charity Taylor is working with is Big Sisters of B.C. Taylor does all of this through her own downtown Vancouver company, The Production Line, which she started eight years ago with partner Libby Ordel, whom she has since bought out. Taylor was born and raised in fdmonton and carned a Bachelor of Science in household economics at the University of Alberta. For 10 years she was a manager and buyer for The Bay in Alberta and Vancouver and has taught market- ing at Capilano Coilege for 14 years. A woman must have strong marketing, selling and ad- ministrative skills and has to be able to write and communicate. And she has to be prepared to enter into a financial risk.’” The constant financial stress is Taylor's toughest challenge, she Says, but ‘vou learn to deal with it.” If she could be 18 years old again, and know what she knows now about the irede show business and about life in general, would she dc it ail over again? “Sure I would,’ she laughs. ‘1 was fortunate to get a good uni- versity education and to work in 2 combination of professions that have contributed to what I’m do- ing now.
