28 - Friday, November 2, 1990 - North Shore News THE CANON EOS/kKokanee Beer/Com-West Radio race team of Andy Mahood was in action Oct. 7 at the East-West Shootout, the final event of the 1990 Player's Ltd./GM Motorsport Series at Coquitlam’s Westwood Motorsport Park. Simply qualifying for the se- cond annual $50,000 national piayoff was tough enough; Mahood having to finish the regu- lar season in the top 12 of over 50 drivers across the country. And tight from the green flag, it was obvious Mahood was in against the toughest competition he’d ever faced. Starting in the sixth row of an extremely fast grid, Mahood stared at a lot of rear bumpers at the outset of the 30-lap feature. which will be televised nationally on CTY’s Wide World of Sports later in the year. “The race itself was a chance to make up for some dismal quali- fying,*’ said the 34-year-old driver later, in reference to some com- paratively slow times he’d turned in pre-race qualifying sessions one day previous. “But we went with older tires in our morning warm-up, and hit some much better times. I figured I'd move through the pack once the race had begun.”’ And, true to his words, Mahood had moved from 12th to 10th in the first half dozen laps, and looked to be gaining ground on the mid pack. Meanwhile, up front, a titanic battle was being waged between western Canadian regular season champ Frank Allers, and eastern top-gun, Richard Spenard. But the paint being exchanged in the lead confrontation was nothing in comparison to the experience Mahoed was about to encounter. in hard braking for the Turn 4 hairpin corner, Mahocd was set upon by the Camaro of Edmon- ton’s Kevin Dowler. Dowler’s nose rammed the passenger door of the black Canon/Kokanee machine, sending shards of glass throughout the cockpit, and leav- ing $2,500 worth of damage to Capilano VW’ Ltd. He must've been 15 car lengths behind me as [| slowed (for the tight turn). But suddenly, there he was. Mahood expressed appreciation after the race, ‘*) really have to thank my sponsors — Canon, Kokanee, Com-West. Unfortunately, the shootout may be the last pro race, or any trace to be held at the Westwood facility.
