7 - Wednesday, April 25, 1999 - Narth Shore News Motorist learns a lesson; gives a warning Dear Editor: Thank you for your information supplement for automobile owners, in your edition of March 30. You are to be congratulated, especially for the article on car ac- cidents. However, there is additional in- formation that every citizen and motor vehicle driver should know Seniors make housing plea Open letter to West Yancouver Council We, the undersigned seniors of West Vancouver, are deeply con- cerned with the present lack of af- fordable housing in our municipality. We are given to understand that you are elected to serve ail the res- idents of West Vancouver and yet we now find that nothing has been done for fixed income seniors since the 1970s. We have paid taxes and have helped to build this beautiful community, but many of us find that now, through no fault of our own, we are unable to cope with the extremely high rent increases that are now becoming so com- mon. We are told repeatedly that there is no available land. Perhaps the true meaning of this phrase is “there is no land made available for affordable housing for about the operation of our justice system in the event of an accident. I was in collision with another car just before Christmas. Two police officers attended and after surveying the scene, talking to both drivers and to two witnesses, a charge of running a yellow light was filed against the other driver. In my appointment with the ICBC adjuster, my statement was seniors.”" If our mayor and council could please do something other. than form housing taskforces every two years and instead face up to this very serious problem, the seniors of West Vancouver would begin to feel that their interests are finally deing served. The following list of names form a tiny fraction of the many senior citizens of West Vancouver who are anxiously awaiting some sign of interest in our plight: Kathleen Day, Emiiy Limon, Ludomir Sosinski, Nina Sosinski, Ethel Brown, Norah McMahon, Mildred Clarkson, Jean Atkins, Gladys McGale, A.M. Hill, Margaret Rutherford, Renee Maki, Vincent Cassidy, Chris Cassidy, Charlotte Penwarden and Mona Russell. We would appreciate a response to this letter as soon as possible. Betty C. Johnson West Vancouver Who paid for MLA’s ad? Open letter to John Reynolds, MLA: in the March 30 North Shore News, there is a full page ad on page 10, headed a message from you. The ad features all the alleged efforts you have made for the en- vironment. There is no indication on the ad that it was submitted by the pro- vincial government. My question to you, Mr. Reynolds, is this: Did you personally, or the Social Cred- it party, pay for this ad? Or is it one of numerous print and TV ads being run by the B.C. government, at taxpayers’ expense, to allegedly advise us of government services and programs? Can an election be far away? I was asked over the telephone if | wanted to salvage a two-year-old natural gas conversion in my car. I had al- ready purchased another car for which a conversion was unsuitable, so I declined. Not hearing anything more from anyone by mid-March, I tele- phoned the adjuster, only to be told that the other driver had suc- ceeded in having the charge dismissed by the traffic court judge and unless the witnesses could be found, the accident would be a charge on my insurance. Only one witness’ name was recorded by the police officers and that witness refused to cooperate and is not re- quired dy law to testify. i then received a settlement che- que from ICBC in the amount of $82.11, the net after salvage of a 1977 Ford Granada with a natural gas conversion. A form Setter was received stating that since the acci- dent was now a charge on my in- surance there would be an increase in my premium and that reasons will be supplied upon request. There was no accounting for the salvaging of the car. A traffic court judge can over- tule the collective judgment of witnesses and attending police of- ficers, and thereby penalize the other party who is not present or represented in the court.
