Molson Breweries, spon- sor of the Toronto Molson Indy, will be the main spon- sor for the Vancouver event. Famous racing car drivers such as Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi and Al Unser Jr. will help to draw crowds expected to be over 100,000 during the three-day event. Opcn-wheeled Indy-type racing cars capable of 200 mph will streak around a temporary circuit laid out around B.C. Place stadium. Practice, qualifying, and support races will take place on Friday, Aug. 31 and Saturday, Sept. 1. The race itself will occur on Sunday, Sept. 2. The economic benefits for local businesses, such as hotels and restaurants, will Auto Motion Greg Wilson be enormous (race orga- nizers are praying it won't rain). Projected race-related visitors from Washington, Oregon, California, Alberta and B.C. (outside of the Lower Maintand) from 10,0060 to 20,000. The estimated economic impact of this three-day event will be between $23.7 and $36 million, most of which will stay in the Lower Mainland. The race will be nationally televised on CTV’s Wide World of Sports and broad- cast the same day on TSN in the United States and dozens of other countries.
