claimed as Big Brothers Month on
the North Shore by the local
mayors.

Big Brothers is looking for men
over 19 years old who can spend a
few hours per week with boys from
male-absent homes.

According to North Shore Big
Brothers counsellor Jayne Mac-
donald, the big brothers say they
get as much out of the experience

as the little brothers. ‘‘Not only is
it rewarding but the men get a kick
out of being ‘kids’ again.”

The big brothers spend between
four to six hours every week with a
young boy from a heme without
consistent adult male influence.
“The kids are normal, everydoy
kids, and the men act as role

. models and friends. They’re not

expected to be fathers, just com-
panions who take part in activities
they.both enjoy,’’ said Macdonald.
. She added, ‘““‘We have men from
every walk of life, blue- and

every
age from 19 to 65 to 70. Retired
men make excellent Big Brothers.”
At this time, Macdonald is also
taking names from mothers of
boys who need a big brother. The
waiting list is shorter than usual,
so a boy would have a good chance
of being matched with a brother
fairly soon.
