3 - Sunday, January 15, 1989 - North Shore News MAILBOX ‘Had enough of Zundel worship’ Dear Editor: It has become patently obvious to my wife and I that your publication enjoys the controversy swirling around the red neck of Mr. Doug Collins. The second helping of his nonsense on the “‘questionable’’ validity of the Holocaust is too much to bear. It may attract more attention than normal to your otherwise bland publication. At what cost? As a community newspaper, your mandate is to publish materi- al that meets and mirrors com- munity standards. We have had enough of Mr. Collins’ Ernst Zundel worship and his attacks on creditable historians using publica- tions by the lunatic fringe as his authority. I am neither Jewish nor German and thus I can only empathize with the pain this brand of journalism must bring to both. If this line of commentary remains a staple in your publication I will be even happier that I have a puppy to paper train. J.E. Rabbior North Vancouver Doug Collins should apologize Deas Editor: As a born German I found it scandalous that a hate-filled man like Doug Collins is allowed to spread lies about the Holocaust. Doug Collins quotes people who are in the same category as E. Zundel and Keegstra. I cannot stand by and let Doug Collins draw a man like Elie Wiesel into the dirt. One only has to read a book that E. Wiesel has written to know that the man is a modern saint. E. Wiesel never writes a word of hate, in spite of the fact that most members of his family and of his native communi- ty perished in the camps. I have met here and especially in Paris numerous people with con- centration camp numbers tattooed on their forearms, all of whom were the only survivors of their families, and sometimes of entire communities. What is Doug Collins trying to do: stir up anti-Semitism on the North Shore? I think Doug Collins owes the Jewish community an apology. Terry Dekur North Vancouver HOLOCAUST Collins’ column ‘outrageously stupid’ Dear Editor: Doug Collins’ latest writing on the subject of the Holocaust does net deserve much attention, for it is old hate fabrication recycled for the occasion. One part, however, is so outrageously stupid that it merits a reply. To prove how Holocaust writers are twisting the truth, Mr. Collins is attacking Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel for writing in one of his books about ‘‘gysers of blood’’ spurting from the ground at Babiyar in the Ukraine, months after the massacre there. It is like saying ‘I felt eight feet tall” or ‘‘My heart was in the seventh heaven"’ or even when Mr. Collins calls someone a ‘“‘nut’’ or ‘‘gar- bage”’ which is also physically im- possible.
