the renowned actress, director and
teacher, Joy Coghill, who was
presented with the prized Jessie
Lifetime Achievement Award last
June, has been awarded with
another honor,

The Board of Directors of the
National Theatre School in Mon-
treal have bestowed upon Joy
Coghill, and Quebec's Gratien
Gelinas, the first-ever Gascon-
Thomas Award, a national award
named after the school's founding
directors, Jean Gascon and Powys
Thomas,

The Gascon-Thomas Award was
created to pay tribute to these in-
dividuals for their outstanding
contributions to the world of Ca-
nadian theatre.

Van residents today. Both Bob
Babcock and Glenn Maddess are
30-year veterans of the Vancouver
Fire Department.

This week these two dedicated
firefighters, who came up through
the smokey ranks, have just been
promoted as the department’s new
Deputy Fire Chiefs...

And it was a very happy 82nd
birthday for my favorite lady, my
mother, Isobel Carroll, when we
lunched iast Tuesday at Willi and
Marta Brueckel’s charming
Ambleside Inn.

That was the same setting for
another important dinner with VIP
guests Premier and Mrs. Bill
Vander Zalm, and Archbishop
James Carney.

Premier Bill and Lillian will also
be special guests when North Shore
News columnist Gary Bannerman
opens his new offices in Westview
with wineman, Bob Lindeman,
later this week...

And pretty Miss Texas, Leah
Kay Lyle, popped into town to
promote the Lone Star state and
rustle up a barbecue luncheon for
the media at the Hyatt. Not just
another pretty face, Leah also
played the piano to entertain her
guests...

Speaking of delectable food,
NV’s Serge Simard, Hotel Van's
Food and Beverage Director, tells
me that they have just begun their
yearly taste of ambrosia — the
White Asparagus Festival!...
