When the local plant in Kelowna, 8.C. shut down, .
Joe Johnson and 250 others lost their jobs. “
Joe, a 55-year-old cabinet assembler, set out to
find another one. But no one wanted to hire him.
Time and time again he heard: “I'd love to hire you, _
Joe" — but they never did. Joe knew it was because : cme tte
he was 55.
He turned to his Canada Employment Centre oo ee
for help.
Other out-of-work, older workers like Joe were -
struggling. So the Canada Employment Centre, in
conjunction with Joe's union, set up a special train-
ing program. Joe enrolled in an intensive small
gy engine mechanics course. Then he was taught Life
