Give cat its own post

One method of discipline that
works well on a cat is to squirt him
with a water pistol. When you sec
him scratch, say nothing but squirt
him as he starts to scratch. Direct
negative reinforcement like this
will discourage the behavior.

The way to reinforce use of the
scratching post is to cat proof the
furniture and to train the cat to use
the post.

Cat proofing the furniture de-
pends on where the cat is scrat-
ching. If it is the corner of the
couch, use wide tape on the corner
— cats dislike the feel of it and it

will not be visible. The same works
for the edge of stairs or the corner
of a wall.

If it is a large area, such as the
back or the underside of the
couch, buy the thick plastic that
you use for insulation and thumb
tack it over the surface. Cats also
dislike the smell of mothballs and
of freshly cut orange peels. These
placed in the area will also keep
the cat away.

One final hint is to keep the
claws clipped short, a task your
veterinarian can do for you or
teach you how to do yourself.
