8 - Sunday, August 30, 1987 - North Shore News Mailbox EAGLE HARBOUR Farbor peace is long past Dear Editor: With Ms. Shirley Carter I too was amazed by Angus Ree’s complaint about the noise of kalliards on the mast of a sailboat moored near his home at Batcheler Bay. He has it easy! We have lived at Eagle Har- bour for over 30 years and in the last three years or so we have been subjected to com- pressors, jack hammers, ex- plosives and other objectionable noise-making devices as the hillside on Caulfeild plateau is bashed about, excavated and terraced. This noise is pollution just as much as if noxious chemicals or smoke had come pouring down the slope into our garden. We wish for the former peace and quiet, but we are patient and realize that the noise con- nected with such development is inevitable as our beautiful West Vancouver grows, Mr. Ree, take it from an old sailor, the twang of halliards against a mast is music to some ears...and it sure beats jack hammers! REE RESPONDS Rigging, not raccoons, Is the problem Dear Editor: In a letter printed recentty in the North Shore News, a Miss Tod makes the ridiculous suggestion that we switch homes with her so she can avoid the noise from rac- coons ard we can avoid the noise from clang.:-s boat rigging. At the risk of pointing out the obvicus, I feel | must say that the majority of West, Vancouver homeowners suffer periodic disturbances from raccoons. We too have at least one family residing in the wooded cliff adja- cent who have at times come in through the window and who often wake us — that is, when the rigg- ing has not already done so. Perhaps she would like to swap families of raccoons? The municipality is not at fault in regard to the ongoing raccoon problem. It is not a man-made problem except insofar as residents have altered food sources and playing areas by living in the rac- coons’ midst. The clanging from irresponsible boatowners’ rigging is man-made and easily preventable. The noise is simply an unnecessary addition to the usual disturbances — one which we hope the mayor and council will have the good sense to change. Cheri A.
