Mailbox WV Council commended for fighting war games Dear Editor: It might interest your readers that Mr. Steven Hynes Sr., the fa- ther of one of the two young men who were operating their military survival games on Hollyburn Mountain, is a director of Cypress Bowl Recreations Lid., the com- pany that holds a 50 year operating Dear Editor: The serenity of Whytecliff Park was shattered on Sunday, August 17 by members of a particular ethnic group who took over the grounds for a picnic and organized (complete with loud hailer) games. They occupied every parking space and dozens of cars were il- legally parked on both sides of the narrow road. Fortunately, as we were about to leave the area, sonieone drove away and so we were eventually able to ;.ark (legal- ly) and spend an hour or so on the point with eur Expo visitors. Returning to our vehicle, we found that two inconsiderate peo- ple — members of this group — had parked their cars immediately behind ours and so prevented us from leaving. This raises two questions: First, does the municipality grant permits for this type of activity (and if so, why?) And secondly, if, as we suspect, Incal bylaws expressly forbid special interest groups from com- mandeering a public recreational area, why are the West Van police not enforcing this ban? It may be of interest that the on- ly other grassy area in the park had also been taken over by yet. another group of ‘visible minorities’, One’s point is that this mass of people could be Fuzzie Wuzzies or members of the St. George’s Society for all we care, but we do object to any organized gaggle — particularly groups from outside the municipality — taking over this rather special place to the almost total exclusion of local res- idents. By all means send us your hud- died masses, but please Mary Col- lins, Brian Mulroney, Mayor Humphries et al, not to Whytecliff Park on a Sunday afternoon.
