WEST VANCOUVER Council is
‘Yearning about the birds and the
bees,’ said Mayor Derrick Hum-
phreys.

A beekeeping by law that was
introduced at Monday's council
meeting received third reading.

The purpose of the by-law is ‘‘to
regulate the moving and keeping of
bees and to define areas within

which such bees may be kept ar
within which the keeping of them
is prohibited’’ in West Vancouver.

The by law was established as a
result of beekeeping complaints in
Horseshoe Bay-Gleneagles areca.

The bylaw, as originally in-
troduced, stated that no more than
three colonics of bees could be
kept on an area of Iess than 20,000

- square feet, or more than six colo-

nies per parcel.

Ald. Diana Hutchinson said she
has been learning about beekeep-
ing the past several months, and
understood that a fourth hive is
necded “‘if there is a loose queen
bee,’ so that it would not be fair
limiting the colonies to three.

Further information about bees

and their swarming habits was
provided to council by hobby
beekceper David Roberts, who has
kept bees in West Vancouver for
27 years.
