Kids should be doers

PAT GALLAHER is an expert on play. A parent of four girls
ranging in age from two months to 14 years old, he was train-
edasa pre-school teacher, and believes children should be in-
volved in their play. He has owned and operated B.C. Playthings

HOW MANY of us parents stop to consider how
we affect our child’s future when we choose toys and

playthings?

which are hyped and pro-

a few seconds or minutes.

has to do is ‘push the but-

. Will this same child grow up
to be an adult who has been
conditioned to sit back and
watch the world go by?

A child should be totally
involved in his play, so that
the play does not exist
without the direct input of
the child himself. This does
not limit the choice of activi-
ties ... rather it opens doors
to creative and imaginative
opportunities, which we
need to nurture.
