NORTH VAN.DISTRICT - WHEN ARCHIE Steacy joined the fledgling North Van- couver district fire department in 1956, he Saw it as a career move. By MARK HAMILTON ‘“‘T even thought at the time of the possibility of becoming chief of the department one day,’’ Steacy remembers. It took a while but this week, slightly less than 28 years later, Steacy settled into the fire chief’s office at the department's Lynn Valley headquarters. For Steacy, replacing Bob Walker who left the force earlier this year to become chief in Edmonton, the rise to the top has come to mean more than just a career. ‘‘} guess it’s a_ terrible thing to Say but I like going to fires,’’ he says. ‘‘They’re ‘ew — NEWS photo Stuart Davis NORTH VANCOUVER ODistrict’s new fire chief Archie Steacy has reasons to smile, he’s Al! - Sunday, June 24, 1984 - North Shore News fet setties In department up to a very high standard.”” Along the way, Steacy developed his own special interests in the. training of fire fighters — he found the job of training officer relatively easy berause of his background as a teacher — ‘and in the ‘‘nuts and bolts’’ . aspects of fire incident ' command. In many ways, he and the department have com- plemented each other in those roles, with North Vancouver district placing a heavy emphasis on training and on improved fire command. Both, he says, will continue to have priority. As chief, he would also like to see the department more heavily involved with the public ‘‘in a way that benefits the public’’, Steacy says. ‘*l want us, as a depart- ment, to set off in a very positive direction and to exciting and dangerous and made it into the chief’s office after 28 years with che force. challenging and, in the end, you feel good because ; you’ve accomplished a something not only for C i d yourself but for others and ou n Ci a ge n a S$ the community itself.’’ keep going that way,’’ he says. “My News photos are for sale.” You can purchase an 8''x10"'. professional quality print of any photograph of mine or photos by the other News photographers. 7 5. ea Two to tour copies of the same print #90. oo Five or more copies of the same print $7 50.
