However, choosing those who will stay on, may cause a serious conflict between the board's priority list and aide senority. Other items which will be cut include: a $50,000 reduction in the equipment replacement budget, $41,000 in school supplies, $20,000 in library books and $7,500 in caltoral and performing arts. “Our priority was to protect the classroom level of instruction and reduce the level of service,” said School Supderintendent Ed Carlin. ‘BANDAID' Alban called the cuts a “bandaid solution,” which does very little to help the further cut of $1.2 million ordered for next year. “But I guess a four-month measure is about the best we can do now,” Alban said. School trustee Margot Fark called the cuts in the budget “rather ex- treme.” She was the only board member who ex- pressed a desire to see some type of roliback or partial Layoff of teachers. Board member Dawn Sikula was furious at the Ministry of Education for ordering the cuts and called on the board to refuse to Jeremy Leevers S f 921-8215 MITTEN REALTY LID comply with the restraint program. Her motion met with enthusiastic support of the audience, but did not gain any support from the board. The trustees came under criticism from both political sides at the meeting as they were hammered for not taking a stand on rollbacks, and not trying to negotiate a better deal from the Ministry of Education. “The fiscal restraint formula actually punishes those boards who have practiced fiscal restraint,” said one teacher. “The board has little it can do,” said Carlin. 15 teaching aide jobs to be axed in W. Van On a lighter note, Alban suggested the board look into the Unemployment Insurance Commission's Work Sharing Plan to see if any layoffs can be held off. “I hesitate to bring this up at this time because when | discussed this at an earlier Meeting with trustees I was called a communist ... I am not a communist and have never been a communist,” Alban said. Alban told the meeting that one of his radically “right wing clients” used the program. “In fact, if you scratched their surface you would probably find a Socred.” WE CAN’T WIN WITHOUT YOU!
