A8 - Sunday, Jume 277, 1982 - North Shore News [7 mailbox ii ‘Single issue’ church Dear Editor: I write this letter on Father’s Day. J am a Roman Catholic and have just returned from church. Silly me, my Catholic upbringing led me to expect that in gomg to Mass on Father's Day, 1 would hear a sermon about fathers. Even though | no longer have one, and am not one myself, I enjoy hearing nice things about dads The Cathohc Church, or at least Holy Trimity parish, apparently ts no longer concerned with such sim- plistic and benign messages. Not one word was men- tioned about Father's Day. In fact, the sermon was the same as it has been for the past several wecks - abor-— tion, The Cathohc Church, it seems, has become just another single tssue lobby group. As a Catholic 1 am disgusted. The message, like those of other virulent single-issue “anti” groups is heavily emotionally laden and backed by a _ ngid doctrine which preaches tunnel vision — or else! The anti-abortion message has not only displaced the teaching of God in _ the sermon, it seems to have taken over Holy Communion and must be restated before the final blessing. The Catholic Church is trying to mobilize its congregations to converge on the annual meeting of the Lions Gate Hospital Society to elect a slate of anti- abortion candidates. I've never been a member of a hospital society before, but | am joining this year. I intend to vote for common sense and defeat the single-issue lobbyists who have thrown religion out of my church. These people who would convert our health care system into a_ single-issue debate mention not one word about the broader Take council to task OPEN LETTER TO NORTH VAN CITY COUNGL Now the shock has really settled in and the business people realize that the 1982 taxes on theis commercial and mdustrial properties are for real, I think it's time that our mayor and council are taken to task. After the 1982 budget over the 1981 budget. I find that for gencral purposes “only”, that in times of restraint, our council saw fit to increase gencral purpose = spending from $7,425,121 m 1981 to $10.838.092 in 1982, an increase of $3,410,302, or 46%. This in my opinion is disgraceful and it 1s too bad there is not some legal way we can stop this sort of action by council. If they had donc thts in 1983 instcad of 1982. they wouldn't be there tn 1984. les a shame that when business for a lot of mer chants 1 down. that they have to be faced with a 00 to 90% imcrcase on thei taacs It's like kicking somconc when they arc down There is only one way that council can partially vin- dicate themselves, and that is by making sure that the 1982 budget is not spent, and total restramt made in all departments, and the money saved in 1982 go toward lowering the taxes in 1983. In the meantime, I feel it’s tame that concerned citizens and business people get together and form a group to get people to run for council that have good business expenence, and not only care for our citizens, but also for all our commercial and industnal business people J.W.
