Political

numbers can be especially tantalizing, and seldom
more so than the numbers that emerged from the
‘May 22 federal election results. But although

Prime Minister Joe Clark and his Tories failed to. |

win an overall majority, those numbers Suggest
that he may be running our store for quite a time

to come.

confidently ahead as though

he did, in fact, have a secure .

overall majority —- and why.

answer lies in the NDP
numbers.

Election night for NDP
leader Ed’ Broadbent was a
bitter-sweet experience. His

_party increased its share. of

the popular vote to 18 per
cent from 15 per cent in 1974

“(an impressive 20 per cent

gain). Its seats in the
Commons rose to 26 from 16
(a 62.5 per cent jump). But it
just missed being enough.

With his 26 seats Mr.
Broadbent still remains a
whisker short of holding the
balance of power between
Conservatives and Liberals

, predictable Creditistes.

So near, and yet so far.

KINGMAKERS

For this reason -- and no
matter what threats Mr.

Broadbent may breathe in
public over the coming
weeks -- it’s highly unlikely
that the NDP will make any
serious effort to gang up with
the Liberals and any anti-

Tory Creditistes to defeat .

Mr. Clark’s. government in
the next year or two.

election might
disastrous. for the New
Democrats. Members of the
NDP inner circle fear that
such a move — ‘before the
Tories have been given a fair
chance either to prove
themselves or fall flat on
their faces -— might only
encourage voters to return a

curred in 1974. After being
kept in power by the NDP
for two years, the minority
Liberal government was
returned with a-~ solid
majority — while Trudeau’s
former New Democrat allies

reason to tolerate the Tories
for a season lies in the
renewed strength of the New
Democrats. Even though
they don’t quite hold the
balance of power, the 26
NDP MP’s are nevertheless a
force to be reckoned with.

They have strong, clear-
cut policies: a new industrial
strategy, the retention of
PetroCanada, establishment
of a fair pricing commission
and the reaffirmation of
federal support for
medicare. Aside from the
rather complex question of
PetroCanada, these are
policies with broad popular

. appeal.

to benefit from a couple of |

quit before you've played at
least one hand that could be

Indeed, if the NDP played
its cards skilfully enough in
this kind of game,
might even be.some hope --
distant though it may appear
at the moment -- of
displacing the Liberals as the
official opposition at the
next election.

much on Mr. Clark's side if
he plays--them wisely.
