6 ~- Sunday, November 26 , 1989 - Norik Shore News INSIGHTS New map throws voting patterns out of window INTERESTING TIMES are Icoming for soine 70,000 pro- vincial voters between central North Vancouver and Pemberton Meadows — not to mention two sitting MLAs and a third, as yet non-existent, MLA. ‘Looming’’ because the new electorate boundaries drawn last year by Judge Thomas Fisher take effect March 1, 1590, with a pro- vincial election expected by fall at the latest. Possibly sooner. By creating a fourth North Shore riding — Lonsdale (No. 32 on the map) — which takes in almost everything south of the Upper Levels between the Capilano River and the Second Narrows, His Honor has thrown previous North Shore voting pat- terns clean out of the window. To fit the newcomer in, present West Van-Howe Sound will be chopped in half at 22nd St. and the revised riding (No. 72) pushed north beyond Pemberton. All of West Van east of 22nd St. will then join the remaining northern por- tion of present North Van- Capilano to make a renamed Capilano riding (No. 8). The intriguing question is which : ~ a ANGUS Ree ...life a tittle unfair. Junior Van-Howe Sound’s present in- cumbeat, Environment Minister John Reynolds, will come down on. Staying west of it would mean losing half his loyal, well-heeled West Van constituents in exchange for a bunch of additional farmers, loggers and lunch bucket voters north of Squamish. His alternative is the new Capilano riding with its hitherto solid Socred bastions of Ambleside, the Properties, Cedar- dale and upper-income Capilano Highlands. If he plumps for east of the fence, the next question is what happens to his Sacred buddy, North Van-Capilano MLA Angus Ree? On numbers alone Reynolds could likely win the Capilano nomination — not because Ree is unpopular but simply because the West Van portion of the new riding has twice as many paid-up party members as the Capilano portion. Rather than risk a nomination defeat, Ree might well let Reynolds have the Capitano and run himself in the new Lonsdale riding. He al- ready represents most of it and, despite the likelihood of a strong NDP candidate, the Socred backroom boys believe it’s win- nable. Even without the new electoral map life has been a little unfair to Angus recently, Despite a decade of service to constituents which, since 1979, has twice earned him re-election with large majorities, some of those constituents are now asking why he was dropped from the cabinet last month after only a year as solicitor-general. pickets may present a poignant picture, but to use Pras recent children walking a picket line children to further a cause is, at best, misguided. The front-page photo of Wednesday’s News showed The compelling reason had nothing to do with his perfor- mance. Desperate for a minister from Vancouver oa his 1990 elec- tion team, Billi Vander Zalm could no longer afford three on the North Shore (Speaker John Reynolds counti~g as ministerial rank). So Angus temporarily got his pink slip the way thousands of good employees get laid off in tough times -- on the ‘‘last in, first out’’ principle. And the final question, of course: if John jumps east. who'll represent all the Yuppies from 22nd St. to Lions Bay? Never call North Shore politics dull! vat TAILPIECES: That wheelchair gentleman beside a tabie laid out with cards this week at Wood- ward’s Food Floor in Park Royal, will likely be West Van’s Bill Oin — for years a volunteer helping © sanday branch e handicapped groups whose prob- lems, as you'll sce, he knows at first hand. Do yourself a favor by sparing a moment to examine his wares. To judge by the ex- pression on his face, he knows little abcut the issue his sign trumpets, and could care even less. One of the most important qualities parents can pass on to their children is the ability to weigh both sides of an issue and use their cwn judgment to formulate opi- nions. Parents should not automatically expect their children to agree with their beliefs, nor should they enmesh them in their own political batties before their children are old enough to understand what those bat- tles are ali about. To do so is to short-circuit a child’s ability to think and make decisions for himseif. Feeding children the rhetoric of one’s own political affiliations can also result in children subconsciously believing they musi agree with their parents’ way of thinking in order to be loving — or to be loved. Obviously, these sobering possibilities are not going through 2 parent’s mind when he or she hands his or her child a picket sign. But aext time. perhaps they should be.
