istorical society honored

THE West Vancouver Historical Society recently received
the volunteer achievement award of honor fron: ihe Pro-
vincial Heritage Association, The award recognizes the
society’s transformation of West Vancouver’s Gertrude
Lawson House heritage home into the West Vancouver

museum and archives.

It was a challenge offered to the
society after West Vancouver
District bought the $1-million
Property from the beneficiaries of
the Lawson estate.

At West Vancouver District
Council’s July 19 meeting, society
president Peter Hall and the
society, along with members of
the West Vancouver Rotary Club,
handed over the last instalments
of the $450,000 the two groups
raised for the restoration project.

The money was collected from
provincial government programs,
private donations ($100,000 from
the Lawson family) and fund-
raising projects.

The effort received support
from the Rotary Club and from
many of the approximately 400
people who belong to the West
Vancouver Historical Society.

The society has also received a
Green Gold Grant from the pro-
vincial and federal forestry agen-
cies to conduct research into West
Vancouver's forest and logging
heritage.

An exhibit and walking tour will
be developed around the theme.

fulfilled its Gertrude Lawson
House restoration commitment,
Hall said he hopes the

municipality will soon begin
operating it as a regular parks and
recreation department facility.

Al present, a curator and ar-
chivist are employed part-time,
with volunteer support from the
historical society.

“TY have never seen such com-
munity spirit. There is a great
sense of place and history here,’’
said curator Jacqueline Gijssen, a

telative newcomer to West Van-
couver,

Hall said the society will con-
tinue to assist the professionals in
operating the facility and raising
funds for equipment and special
projects.

‘West Vancouver now has an
asset that is worth a great deal,”
said Hall.

Built at 680 17th St. in 1939,
Gertrude Lawson house was origi-
nally intended as a place for
women who had fallen on hard
times, according to archivist
Christina Andrews.

To build the house, Lawson
became the first woman to receive
a mortgage in British Columbia.

Membership in the historicaf
society, which includes receipt of a
newsletter, costs $15 per year for
those under 60 and $10 per year
for those over 60.
