Four North Shore firms receive research grants FOUR NORTH Shore firms are among 51 B.C. companies which will be receiving a share of $2.9 million worth of Assistance Grants for Applied Research (AGAR) funds an- nounced recently by the Science Council of B.C. The Neil Squire Foundation receives a grant of $70,000 to sup- port the research and development of a voice recognition training software package. The software wilt be used by disabled people who have severe restrictions on their mobility. North Vancouver-based Richardson Industries received a grant of $60,000 to look into new techniques for the detection and analysis of brain activity. Hard- ware and software systems resulting from the research will be integrated with expansion cards for IBM personal computers used by medical researchers. Ballard Advanced Materials Corporation receives $90,309 in funding to continue development of a low-cost, efficient polymer electrolyte for use as a membrane in the company’s fuel cells. West Vancouver's Quantum Vi- sion Corporation teamed with Digicon Engineering of North Vancouver to receive $48,928 for the production of a commer- cially-viable machine vision system that will automatically inspect salmon cans. The mechanical eyes will look for cans with skin or bone protruding over the rims of cans.
