At 12:50 p.m., Auxiliary I was dispatched — by Canadian Coast Guard's Victoria rescue centre to a burning cight-metre power boat north of Horseshoe Bay. The eight-metre rigid hull inflatable lifeboat departed its Fisherman’s Cove base 10 minutes ijater under the com- mand of coxswain Cliff Jones, with crew Hugh Kelsey, Randy Strand and veteran coxswain Bruce Falkins. The burning powerboat’s operator was reported safely on board another vessel that responded to the mayday broadcast. Once Asxiliary I arrived on scene in 2 mins utes, it began to apply speci fire-fighting foam on the burning boat, which was engulfed in flames. Canadian Coast Guard Cutter Osprey and Auxiliary 14 from Gibsons arrived 10 minutes later. A fireboat took over the job of extinguishing the destroyed boat. _. Meanwhile, at 1:40 p.m., the Deep Cove Léfebont was dispatched to a medical evacu- ation at Iron Bay, 10 nautical miles (18 km) north of Deep ove. A 50-year-old) man. suf- tered severe head and face injuries dirt-biking on a log- ging road, approximately eight miles (13 km) north of Iron Bay. He was among boaters docked at the Deep Cove Yacht Club out-station in Indian Arm. He was found by a fellow biker and trans- ported to the dock. They con- tacted Vancouver coast guard radio via a marine VHF radio. The boat, under the command of coxswain Jimmy Wats, and crewed by coxswain Stewart Buchanan and Dan Greenwood, left Deep Cove at 2:01 p.m. with two para- medics and reached the casu- alty in 23 minutes. After being treated at Iron Bay, the casualty was trans- ported to an ambulance at Deep Cove. The Lifebeat returned to its base in Deep Cove at 3:30 .m. The Sunday incidents capped a busy week for the volunteer Coast Guard Auxiliary members. Auxiliary I recovered a small boat that had broken its mooring from Eagle Island March 30. The boat was sported by a BC Ferry three nautical miles (6 km) south of Cape Roger Curtis, Bowen Island. The small craft was towed to Poitit Grey by the tug General Jackson where Auxiliary One Picked it up and towed it back to Fisherman’s Cove.
