Gordon and his wite Marion have been a gra cious presence and integral part of the fabric of the arts community in Vancouver, Gordon and Marion Smith were part of a growing group of artists that chose 10 nove to West Vancouver in the 1950s, In selecting Arthur Erickson and Geotf Massey to design their first home in 1953, they exposed the community to the possibilities of modern architecture and its sensitivity to site. Uheir see- ond home, completed in 1966, is one of the finest examples of Erickson residential design, with characteristic walls of glass, supported by strong post and beam elements, all in harmony with the natural landscape. Bining among others. By 19-46 he was teaching at the Normal School in Victoria and at the Vancouver School of Art. Smith later joined the Faculty of Education at UBC and during his tenure (1956-1982) he inspired many students and taught them the importance of finding a personal artistic voice. During his carcer, Smith has been acknovwl- edged with many awards and accolades. In 1955 he ‘von first prize in the First Biennial of Canadian Painting hosted by the National Gallery of Canada. Smith was chosen to repre- sent Canada at the Sac Paulo Biennial, Brazil, in 1960 and in the same year was awarded a Canada Council Senior Fellowship.
