The . exhibition opens Aug. 24 and runs.to Sept. 12 at the West Van gailery, 1414 le Ave. included in the show are a. number of creations by - North Shore artists, includ- ing Keith and Celia Rice- . Joncs, whose clay works are currently on exhibit at the - Seymour Art Gallery, painter -Kiff Holland, sculptor Ian Rowles and mixed-media . ; artist Sharalee Regehr. |! The exhibition encom- passes a wide variety of Media — painting, sculpture - and photography are repre- sented here — yet the - underlying theme through- - our is the salmon:and the environmental issues of pro- tection and conservation. 7 Glass artist Marina Papais curated the show, which debuted at the Roundhouse Community Centre last June and showed again at the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam last fall. Her collaborations with Nisga’a carver Norman Tait and his carving partner Lucinda Turner as well as Richard Thompson and Lawrence Ruskin are included in the show, In First Nations lore, the salmon represents the circle of life, says Papais. “When they have completed their journey, spawned and given their bodies for others to feed upon, their spirits lift and come back into the eggs they have just spawned.” Our Salmon, Our Children, One Earth was created as a result of the many community and school projects Papais has worked on that involved the salmon and art. The exhibition is being held in conjunction with the Coho Festival, which raises funds for salmonid enhance- ment education and protec- tion on the North Shore. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the fes- tival takes place Sept. 5 to 12 at Ambleside Park and other West Van locations.
