Later, Binning became interested in analytical cubism and his work became increasingly abstract and concerned with architectural relationships. His work has been exhibited widely in Canada and the U.S., as well as at the Sao Paulo Biennale and at the Venice Biennale. In 1972 Binning was ~ honoured as an Officer of the Order of Canada... Binning and his wife Jessie built their home in West Van | in 1939. This building was one of the first “modern” houses to be built in the area. The design of the house was so radi- cal — one of its main features being a flat roof — that the.. mortgage company had to be convinced of the soundness vf “, the design. In this home, Binning explored the relationship between - ‘abstract art to the “new architecture” by providing an interi- or gallery for his work and by painting a murel on the exteri . or entrance of the house. The house still stands today and is’ considered one of the best examples of West Coast .. a Modernism. as Binning made a great contribution to the arts'n -only- West Vancouver, but also throughout the Lower, Mainland: In 1955 he founded the Department of Fine Arts at. UBC, having already taught for many years at the UBC School of Architecture. _Binning also collaborated ¢ with architects and engineers on majcr. buildings in ‘Vancouver.
