We Kiss all fired up over No feet of clay on this retired W. Van architect By Deana Lancaster Contributing Writer deana@nsnews.com IN his black kiln book, Zoltan Kiss has recorded every piece of pottery he’s made, It is filled with pencil sketches of the pat- tery itself, its position in the kiln, the precise formulation for the glaze used, and detailed explanations about what works and what does- n't. He says it’s kind of like his recipe book. And it seems typical of an artist who made a successful living as an architect until his retirement, “T always wanted to do ceramics,” he said, * “But it’s hard while you are running an office.” " His interest stems from years working in a ceramics factory in Denmark, where he escaped to from Hungary before the war. There, he learned about studio and ‘industrial ceramics, and about their chemistry. Now, the West Vancouver artist likes to work on the wheel: “It’s absolutely. magic to do something with this lump of clay, But only about'20% of the work is the wheel.” The rest is chemistry, >, . “Every, one of my pots has a different u creating ceramic art glaze,” he sald, He mixes them bimself, cares fully and precisely — although one of his best glazes was “a mistake. | aceldentally mixed two without realizing, it,” But ies in the kiln his ceramics find their true form, It's heated to 2,350" FB (1,280°C) — “It's a real litte hell, At that temperature all the metals are running, You can never predict what will come out, you gamble and guess,” The result also depends on air introduced during firing and the weight and position of the ceramics in the kiln, It’s from the kiln that thé name of his new show, opening at the Ferry Building Gallery on Tuesday, is derived, Playing With Hire is one of two invitational exhibitions to be held at the gallery this year. Most shows there are juried, but twice a year, invitational exhibitions are held as a spe- cial celebration to honor exceptional artists, Kiss is just such an artist, As well as his ceramics — formless sculp- tures, faces, jugs, vases and bowls in rich col- ors and metals — Kiss will be exhibiting, his paintings for the first time, The oil and watercolor paintings include images of Hornby Island and of places around the world he’s travelled to. ; Playing With Fire runs to June 1. The gallery is located at 1414 Argyle Ave, in West Vancouver, Hours are neon to 8 p.m. daily, closed Mondays. Cove Cliff receives award - 2.)
