Parliament convenes

Speech to open the fifth
session of ihe North
Shore Youth Parliament
on Friday.

It’s: the fourth year the
West = Vancouver-Capilano
MLA has acted as the
Honorary Lieutenant
Governor for the youth parlia-
ment. Dalton said the process

is an important exercise for
the estimated 30 secondary
schvol students who will be
participating.

“This is an clection year,
and even though they may not
be voters yet, they should pay
attention to the — political
process because they may
vote in the next election,” he
said.

The purpose of the session,
which will run until Sunday,
is to educate North Shore
youth about the traditions and
procedures of government.
On the weekend, students will
debate issues such as post-

secondary education funding
and B.C. sovereignty.

Dalton said the students
are very keen. “These people
are vitally interested in the
parliamentary process, They
are very dedicated. They
spend the whole weekend jn
district hall,” said Dalton.

David Schreck, MLA for
North Vancouver Lonsdale,
Daniel Jarvis, MLA for North
Vancouver-Seymour and
North Vancouver MP Ted
White are also scheduled to
participate.

The proceedings will be
open to the general public.
