Leaders K-9 Training
next Saturday is our
evaluation class.

Monty, my seven-and-a-
half month old black Lab,
will do fine. It’s me ’'m wor-
ried about.

Sierra co-leaders Joan
Klucha and Barb Maclagan
will not be watching Monty

as much as they watch what I:

do: how well 1 lay and follow
my track with him, give his
commands and correct him.

Although he may not be
perfect yet, they want to be
sure I have the tools to con-
tinue his training over the
winter. ;

During Saturday’s class I
got lost again. It’s not hard
or me to do — I get lost in
apartinent buildin:

the track, with detail rivaling
that of a Bateman print, but

it was useless. Every stump,
tree and moss-covered log
looked the same to me.

Monyy set off, nose to the
ground, tail wagging, easily
finding-the course I'd put
down.

Halfway through he head-
ed left — I pulled right.

“Bring, him back and redi-
rect him,” said Maclagan.

I tried. Monty pulled left
again,

“Are you sure you went
this way?” asked 1 Maclagan.

“Pretty sure,” I replied,

The purpose of practicing
tracking is to exercise a dog's
natural instinct. Tracking is
mentally stimulating and
physically challenging for the
canine.

Secondly, if the dog loses
track, his pack leader (in
Monty's case, me) will be
able to guide him back on,
instilling in the dog a great
respect and love for his mas-
ter.

So much for the second

goal. Although T can see how

well it’s working with other
dogs in the class, the reverse
is true for us.

Monry is guiding me back
on the track when I lose it.

Oh well, f knew he was
smart. Both Maclagan and
Nucha told me Monty’s mis-
chievousness and defiance are
signs of intelligence.

Next time, I’m looking
for a stupid dog. This one is
beginning to alienate my
friends.

Sunday morning we
stopped at the bank before
going on a hike. Monty was
checking out my friend
