LIFESTYLES 51 - Wednesday, Octeber 19, 1988 - North Shore News knotes go on COIN SHOW CPENS iN N. VANCOUVER A TIMELY exhibit of political banknotes is the feature exhibit at the 14th annual coin show of the North Shore Numismatic Society. The show will be held at the Lonsdale Recreation Centre, Lonsdale Avenue and 23rd Street, on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The non-negotiable political banknotes reflect the many satir- ical whimseys of past campaigns. Themes are varied, reflecting topics of anti-government, anti- establishment and, in some cases, anti-everything. Names from the past come to surface and memories are jogged with the situations that prevailed at ministers and the Barratt Cocktail note (B.C. on The Rocks). Further examples include the Occupation Reichmark issued dur- ing the Second World War, Bonds or Bondage note, the Diddle Dollar, Maritime Bucks which proclaim the constitutional tug of war, and Liberal-NDP Coalition Bucks. The humor in the notes is easily recognized as a very potent weapon and is used by politicians. The Rhino Party is well known for its use of this device. “Come and see these very col- lectible, humorous and _ satirical banknotes of political campaigns of the past. See for yourself if the issues have changed,’”’ says Ray Mah, show chairman. the time.
