Tips make painting easier

THERE ARE actually some people
in this world who like to paint.

Those of us who don't find that
hard to believe; however, if rela-
tives are coming for a visit and it
must be done, here are a few tips
that will make the job casicr.

Try to plan the job so that it can
be broken up into two parts. The
night before move all the fur-
niture, leaving heavy items in the
middle of the room, covered with
polyethylene, and spread drop
sheets on the floor.

Polyethylene is not as good as a
drop sheet because it is slippery
and hard to keep in place. Old
sheets and shower curtains are cx-
celient since they do stay in place.

Next you can remove all switch
plates, drapes and curtains,
chandeliers, etc. Then fill all the
holes and cracks that have

- mysteriously appeared with a good
spatuling or patching compound.

Go to bed early and get a good
night's sleep so you will be strong
and fresh in the morning.

Come the dawn, you can sand
the patches and procced with the
paint job. When yoru sand, by the
way, be sure the patches are
smooth and level with the existing
wail,

and be quite’ evident when the
paint is dry.

As to equipment, most walls to-
day are painted with rollers, which
are available in 7% and 94-inch
sizes with still larger ones for the
really’ big job. Buy the squirrei-

wing nuts or fasteners.

Get the right type of sleeve for
your job. Smooth walls call for a
short-pile or mohair roller.

Textured walls and ceilings need
a deep-pile or sheep-skin roller.
Don't overlook some of the new
gadgets that have appeared on the
market.

There is a tray liner that is inex-
pensive and can be thrown in the
garbage when the job is completed,
There are rollers to do corners and
shields to prevent overpaint on
glass: there are disposable paint
pads and foam brushes.

extendable handle. If you are a us-
ing a brush, buy a good one.

Most brushes sold today have
synthetic bristles, but a quality one
will have well-flagged bristles and
will hold a good edge for cutting in
around windows, doors and ceil-
ings. Don't throw the brush into a
tin can after the job is over and let
it sit.

Clean it right away and get it
over with. If you have to leave the
job for an hour or two wrap the
brush and roller tightly with
foilwrap or in a plastic bag. They
will be soft when you return,
