an A-frame shield made of two
pieces of plywood hinged together
at one end. The shield stands over
the plant like a hut.

Established deciduous trees and
shrubs, which lose their leaves in
the winter, need little winterizing
beyond being fertilized.

The trunks of young or newly
planted trees should be wrapped to
guard against winter sunscale, as
well as rabbits and other garden
pests.

Young trees should be staked to

keep them blowing over during
winter storms. Wire a tree to one
Or two wooden stakes, using a
short strip of rubber tubing around
a wire where it circles the trunk.

Except in areas where a con-
tinuous snow cover is the norm, it
is best to apply a winter mulch.
Evergreen branches can be placed
down after the ground freezes and
removed in very early spring.

Decorative mulches such as pine
needles or fir bark can be left in
place year-round. Mulch should be
water-permeable and at least two
to three inches deep.
