& ~ Sunday, Aprit 19, 1987 ~ Narcth Share News Mailbox Honesty is alive and well Dear Editor: In reading a letter from Rosita Grenby in your recent issue, I have been prompted to report a case of another really honest person. Just after the beginning of Feb- ruary | was in Park Royal and carelessly carried my wallet under my arm. After unlocking my car in Dear Editor: It has been an engrossing spec- tacle watching your columnist Bob Hunter transform from a ‘‘pig- baiting” hippie into a yuppie, but I am afraid that the transformation has gone too far. It seems that our fearless whale-slayer has turned into a whimpering wimp begging, as he did in his March 15 column, Big Brother to ‘‘crack down on us. Please.” It is unfortunate that the North American rite of passage into manhood seems to need inordinate amounts of booze and muscle cars, but no amount of ‘cracking down’”’ is going to make much of an impact. The average 19 year old with six beers in him can (a) not die, or at : least does not comprehend the concept and (b) finds peer pressure overwhelming or, in any case, “more than what society as a whole . can bring to bear on him. : If you want to do something, Bob, change our culture’s attitude - to booze, after all you are an old attitude changer from way back. _: OF course, I realize that it is ‘much easier to go begging Big . Brother for help. - By the way, Bob, who are we ‘going to ask him to crack down on next? Abortionists? Smokers? Or ‘how about those whose thinking on apartheid is not ‘“‘correct.’’ - Paul Ruiterman . West Vancouver the parkade outside the Bay store | drove home. { had just gotten in my apart- ment when the phone rang. A lady who didn't give her name was call- ing to say she had found my wallet containing some cash, my driver's licence, all my credit cards, etc. She said she would leave it at the Bay cash office which she did and { claimed it there the following day, I was so very grateful and hope she sees this letter in print. | am constantly being made aware of the honesty of people in general.
