NON-PROFIT GROUP Lifeboat Society responas to over 190 calls THE NORTH SHORE chapter of the B.C. Lifeboat Society has responded to more than 190 calls since January. Tully Waisman, of the BCLS, said the most recent calls included three flare sightings on three subsequent nights beginning July B.C. LIFEBOAT Society volunteer Tully Waisman...society has been kept busy since January, 23 near Bowen Island. After an ex- tensive search, nothing was found. On Aug. 2 the volunteer crew assisted a broken down 36-foot boat. The problem was found to be a dead battery. In the early hours of Aug. 3 crew searched for an overdue rent- al boat with four people on board. The North Shore Lifeboat Society searched for 5% hours in Howe Sound for the 17-foot boat. The vessel was found at 8 a.m. off Cape Roger Curtis. It ran into dif- ficulties after running out of fuel. Again on Aug. 3 at 11:50 a.m. the Jeff Lin Hl, a 20-foot, aluminum pleasure craft was on the rocks at Cape Roger Curtis. The lifeboat crew members reported five-foot swells were causing the boat to smash against the rocks. The vessel sustained damage to the keel, and was towed to Snug Cove. On Aug. 4 two incidents occur- red —~ one involved a broken down 20-foot pleasure boat and the other a broken down 30-foot sailboat. Lifeboat Society. Peter Howard-Jones, the local socicty’s chief fund raiser, said a campaign is currently underway to raise at least $30,000 by October. He said if enough funds are raised, the local chapter would be able to purchase a second Boston Whaler lifeboat that would be sta- tioned at Fisherman's Cove in West Vancouver. He said the society's 17-foot Boston Whaler would be moved to North Vancouver to service the harbor and Indian Arm. The new boat would be 20-feet in length, heavier and better suited to rough weather conditions on the lifeboat west coast, said Howard-Jones. And like the smaller boat, the larger vessel would travel at a top speed of 40 knots. Howard-Jones said the North Vancouver Kiwanis Foundation is the first organization to respond to the society's fund-raising cam- paign. The Kiwanis made a generous donation to the recent campaign, and also donated funds last year to the society. The Lifeboat Society is a non- profit organization that relies on public donations, which are tax deductable. For more information or to make a donation write the B.C.
