Mailbox Where's the beef? Dear Editor: I am writing regarding a headline article on the front page of the North Shore News, dated Feb. 14, My husband and | have cross- country skied at Cypress (Hollyburn) for the last 10 years. Before that, we cross-country skied on the excellent trails at Camp Fortune, near Ottawa. When we first used the trails here, we were appalled at their condition, upkeep and usage. They were not well tracked. The set track is very important — it keeps the skis going straight. Walkers walked in the track — as did snowshoers. People with unleashed dogs allowed them to ‘‘poop’’ wherever — and worse — the dog might be standing at the bottom of a slope. What should I do? Hit the dog? Fall? The owners could care fess. Obviously, there are many places to walk a dog, othér than a cross-country ski area. In all of the Lower Mainland, there are many places for many ac- tivities such as walking or hiking, BUT there is only one place to cross-country ski. I am very curious about the ob- jectives of the Save Cypress Bowl Committee. (Actually, the Bowl is the downhill area, not the cross- country area). . a 984-3388" If they do not use any of the Cypress Bowl Recreation Ltd’s. facilities, as they claim, just what do they do? Your article, to anyone who does not cross-country ski, pres- ents a good argument, but, to anyone who knows the terrain, it is a laugh. Let us assume that the objector has parked — free -—- at the Hollyburn cross-country ski area, donned skis, hoisted the back- pack, and is off to the wilderness. Great! Then what? The skier then climbs — up the groomed and marked trails for 45 mins. or more to the top. Super! Then what? There are four choices — 1. Back the way he came — down the groomed trails. 2. Into the Capilano watershed? No — postcd signs say no entry. 3. Hike over to the Cypress Bow! downhill area, and ski down groomed runs. 4. Fall off a cliff!! (and be rescued by the free patrol). Just where are these marvellous wilderness areas that are to be found by the people you quote? If they really seek wilderness, why not Diamond Head, Black Tusk, or Whistler? ‘Thirty-three clubs custom draperies by S. I presume they include rock-climbers, ice-scalers, etc. When we ski, we observe many kinds of people using the trails — novices, old, young, blind with guides, whole families, etc., all of whom pay their own way. Four dollars is a very small sum to pay for a day’s amusement. A movie of two hours costs $5.50, and I’m sure bowling costs, too. Surely the government should not pay for recreation —- we can always go for a walk free for exer- cise on our own streets. People who do not wish to pay for the use of that area, which is now well maintained, are free to go elsewhere. We cannot feel sorry for them — they are not poor — they own the appropriate clothing and the skis, boots, poles, etc., and obviously have a car, and the free time to transport themselves to a recreational area, so where's the beef?
