are the stars so bright, the sky so big and the sun so

sunny?

Excuse the poor poetic
raptures, genitles all. It’s spr-
ing, and your man has been
to 100 Mile House. So the
Taptures come easily. Not
that 100 Mile is terra in-
cognito. It’s only 259 miles
by BC Rail. But in other
ways it’s a world away.

We're sticking to miles
here, by the way, because it
was in miles that the
Cariboo Trail was first
measured, and what was
good enough for dad is good
enough for me. Not only
that, but if we don't make a
stand somewhere, some
clunch will re-name the place
160.93 km. House. (Clunch:
an awkward, clownish
fellow.)

For your further enlight-
ment, the reason 100 Mile
House is called 100 Mile
House, even though it’s
almost three times that
distance from Vancouver, is
that the count began at
Lillooet, Vancouver never
having been heard of in
those happy days when men
were men and never washed
diapers.

Our expedition was in aid
of trail skiing and physical
rejuvenation. But there was
a small hitch. A few days

Which is how Salt the cat
and | became such good
friends.

Salt the cat is one of a
whole herd of cats owned by
Pat and Juanita Corbett of
The Hills Health and Guest
Ranch, which is where we
were staying. Not that they
tun a catranch, ha-ha, It's
just that the cats mosey in,
knowing a goud thing when
they see one, and take. up
residence with the horses.

Whiskers.”’

Gray-Eyes went ski-ing, of
course. And the minute she
was out of the door, Salt
and | wuld make a beeline
