This outfit among others was shown at In the Mood presented at Pelican Bay Sunday. By TERRY MERCER There was no doubt about it, everyone was “in the mood” for a Mother's Day brunch and fashion show at the Pelican Bay Restaurant at the Granville Island Hotel on Sunday. The show, In The Mood, was a slick and professional production put on by Capilano College's Retail Merchandising students. It featured some of Vancouver's most promising young designers. The designs were worn by the students themselves and one had to look twice (and often three times) to determine that these weren't professional models. The show portrayed the designers at their best featuring their individual sense of style. There was an abundance of natural fabrics in soft muted tones and beiges — like Lilhan Chang's creauions that capture the innocence of natural colored raw silks. Her classic designs were outstanding. Donna Stark displayed a dazzling collecuon of hgh fashion clothing in soft beiges and browns for the professional woman who's looking for something a litte bit dif- ferent. Lucinda Jones also proved that silk ts definitely the “in” fabric this year. Her dramatic designs, in mostly cremes, browns and blues, are meant for the individual and came across with flair. The pretty feminine dress belonged to Sue Jacobsen, a designer who enjoys designing dresses with added features like removable collars. One of the highlights of the show was Cheryl Red- mond’s designs. Cheryl, of C.A. Redmond Knitwear Designs demonstrated her ability to create outstanding pieces by combining fabnc with knitting to make beautiful sweaters with interesting textures and patterns. Her use of natural fibres and dyes create an unusual array of subtle colors. Several people had to take a break from their brunch when her designs arnved on the scene. Esme, a recent graduate from Capilano College's Retail Merchandising program, showed her collecuon of high fashion rain wear. Her designs in- cluded raincoats, jackets and pants. They were in- novauve and had a definite flavor. Jan Mindhn and Lynn Warnok, also Capilano for fashion College graduates, found a need for Canadian designs for the larger woman in mind. Their designs in black and white in sizes 16 and up were both sophisticated and refreshing. Valarie Fawks'designs were mostly classic in wools and silks. She displayed “a unique personal touch by hand painting bright, vivid colored designs on_ her garments.” Janet Lee from “Chinta Manis”, meaning “Love of the good things in Life’’ in Malaysian, presented a _ beautiful collection of Italian linens, in red, white, black and brown. Her designer jackets, skirts and pants were stunning. For the ad- venturesome there was Khyati and Brind. These designers sported an unusual, playful and in- teresting line of clothing all in natural fabrics.
