Local gymnasts tumble into Elite competition EIGHT North Shore gymnasts will travel to Calgary for the Elite Canada competitions in Calgary, while another seven will go to Ter- race for the B.C. Winter Games. Both competitions will run Feb. 28 to March 2. The national-level girls, who all train at the provincial training cen- tre in North Vancouver, will com- pete in the first selection competi- tion of the year in their attempts to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland this summer. The second part of this selection Process is the Canadian Champi- onships to be held in Chicoutimi, Quebec in May. Sandra Botnen, Miriam Michel, Kristin Wingfield, all 15, and 17- year-old Tracy Wilson are all senior national gymnasts. KNEE INJURY Botnen and Wilson made the World Championships team at the end of 1985 and both have a good chance to qualify for the Com- monwealth Games. Michel is working to recover from a knee in- jury sustained at the beginning of the month. . Of the four juniors, Lisa Onno is rated in the top 20. Heather An- drews, 13, has moved up from novice to junior this year, while Ursula Trpin, 15, returns to junior level after a year layoff. Three Flicka Club gymnasts will compete in the women’s 15 and over division at the B.C. Winter Games. Patti Furniss, fifth last year, is hoping for a win, but will have to compete against Monica Nemeth, who is going for her fourth straight title. Both girls are 17, FIRST TIMERS Tami Perkins, 16, and Debbie Setton, 15, will be competing in the games for the first time. _ Perkins is with Flicka and Setton with. the West Vancouver Recre- ation Centre club. In the 14-and under division Flicka’s Analise Oseen, and Jill Wilson both are looking to finish in the top ten. Keith. Lockitch, 14, and Cory Thorson, 12, who train at- West Vancouver’ Recreation Centre, will compete in the 15 and under. divi- sion. . . “* Lockitch, fifth last year, has a good chance at the medal stan- dings. Two Port Alberni girls are ex- pected to defend the women’s ti- tles: Celeste Girard in the younger division and Monica Nemeth in the older group.
