Sasha SRE Se, Leh ae pty me W. Van taxpayers to quiz council, school board Recent increases in West Vancouver property taxes are the subject of a public information meeting tomorrow (Thursday, June 26) starting at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of West Van Secondary School, 1750 Mathers Avenue. The meeting is sponsored by a number of West Van ratepayer and _ citizen groups. Representatives of West Van council and school board will be in at- tendance. Obdjectives of the meeting, say the sponsors, are: ¢ To provide a forum for objective criticism, input and constructive suggestions from taxpayers to. their elected representatives on taxation and _ financial resource allocations; © To clear away confusion, receive accurate factual data and identify the current legal constraints under which council and school board must work; ®To reveal and examine critically provincial government policies and role in funding and cost-sharing for secondary schools, regional district functions and certain municipal operations (e.g., policing in a community penetrated by major provincial highway traffic); . © To call -for closer and continuing liaison between local government and the provincial government through the municipality's MLA. This year’s average in- crease in municipal taxes is 10.9%. School taxes are up by approximately 13% — due in part to a cutback in cost-sharing for schools by the provincial government. However, numerous homeowners whose assessments were increased by the provincial ent authority as a result of rising property values have found the increase im their 1980 tax bill to be considerably higher than the 10.9% average for municipal operations. The municipality collects school taxes on behalf of the school board but has no control over the level of those taxes —- which are set by the elected = school trustees.
