Macdonald Centre for Applied
Design presented their year 2000
collections in Vancouver Dec. 1.

The designs were an eclectic mix of
costume and gypsv inspirations, beach-
‘wear, street-driven looks, "60s retro and
glamourous evening wear.

The show included the creations of
three North Shore residents: Andrea
Hiestand, Carmen Lee and Anca Cheung.

Hiestand’s show-opener featured
wearable costumes inspired by Wagner’s
Ring of the Nibelung cycle. The theatrical
flair of her Brunnhilde, Fricka and Freia
designs reflect Hiestand’s ambition to be
a costume designer. More recently,
Hiestand has designed costumes for Decp
Cove Theatre’s Christmas production,
Panto Menance.

Lec’s all-ivory collection incorporated
soft, feminine lines, sheer and opaque fab-
rics with touches of flowers in prints or

designs

three-dimensional detail.

Cheung’s *60s-inspired set plaved well
ro a cut from the Austin Powers sound-
track. The designer used hand-beaded
denim to create a mini skirt, hor pants and
bell bottoms, shown with a variety of
flashy silver tops.

The Blanche Macdonald Centre, locat-
ed in City Centre, at 12th and Cambie in
Vancouver, offers a 12-month program
with em shasis on fashion iflustration, pat-
tern-making and garment construction.
