The former Southampton apprentice who says he spent more time cleaning pigeon droppings off the rails of the terraces of the Dell rather than playing, made his comments following recent tryouts for the Pegasus entry in the “grad” division of the Van Met Soccer League. Following a short an- nouncement of tryouts in the press throughout the lower mainiand, Scott was getting a strong ‘turnout of young players who had just graduated from the juvenile soccer ranks, until he came to the North Shore, the home of the club. Here, one young 16 year old showed up for the tryouts. Scott says he has been noticing the drop off in the young players over the past few years from this side of the water. Strong attendance, but again, the younger set. Take a look around the parks. Lots of kids, pre-teen, and plenty of younger adults in various softball leagues, but there is a gap. Low or non-existent numbers of the, say, 16-19 age group. Peter Scott knows they're out there. “You always hear of troubles that age group are getting into at night,” he says. Scott finds it hard to believe that the 100 kids or so who graduate from juvenile ranks cach year on the North Shore are sud- denly deciding to just give up on the game. He can’t understand that there are so few around who have the desire and drive to continuc in the game at a high level.
