The association says it is imperative that the bill be passed without unnecessary delay because it contains key recommendations that will help reduce impaired deriving across Canada. “We need to get on with driving the legislation for- ward,” says Brian Hunt, pres- ident of the 4-million-mem- ber CAA, in a June 8 press release. “This legislation will help save lives over the fong term,” Hunt says. CAA supports measures by the federal government to amend the Canadian Criminal Code in ways that will enhance the deterrence value of the legislation with respect to impaired driving. It alo supports measures thar will heighten the conse quences of breaking the law, and be more effective in pre venting repeat impaired dri- ving offences among Canadian drivers. MPs were expected to pass the legislation Wednesday withour delay although some elements of the bill — includ: ing harsher penalties for impaired drivers who take a life — were likely going to be omitted to expedite its pass- ing. CAA is also calling on the government to fast track its investigation of school bus safety issues, particularly as they relate to seat belts. “We need to ensure that our children receive the best protection possible,” said Mr. Hunt. As the narional coordina- tor of Canada’s School Safety Patrol Program, — which includes bus patrollers, CAA works toward the optimal protection of students in buses. ired drivers While current: data shows thar travel by bus is generally very sate, same studies have shown a number of areas that may warrant further investiga tion, CAA plans to. participate actively in Transport Canada hasted school bus safety con: silttions that are taking, place across the country this: sum- mer, The association continu: ously monitors new develop- ments in school bus safety and is encouraged that the tederal government includes bus sale- ty in its ongoing responsibili- ties, CAA is a federation of 11] automobile clubs serving four million members through 120 offices across Canada, wich affiliates in 95 countries.
