The Reform MP has been a tireless constituency repre- sentative. Love him or loathe him, whether you support his party or detest what it stands for, there is no denying that the diminutive New Zealand- raised politician has made his mark by putting constituents ahead of his party. What's noteworthy though is that North Vancouver bas such a long record of electing senior government representa- tives who are independent-minded and willing to fight against the trend of conventional party politics. Federally, North Vancouver was long represented by Chuck Cook, the Tory renegade. Earlier, Ron Huntingdon also served as Conservative MP for North Van in a very outspoken and independent fash- ion. And before that, during the days of Trudeaumania, Jack Davis was the Liberal MP for North Vancouver — and no one ever doubted that he marched to the beat of a different drummer. Jack Davis went on to serve as a provincial Social Credit MLA for North Vancouver, with strong community sup- port for his well-known maverick streak. Over the years, North Van was also represented by a host of other free-thinking provincial politicians, including Liberals Gordon a second opinion “He’s even voted against his party and his own personal beliefs after deter- mining that his con- stituents supported the federal govern- ment’s gun control legislation.” ‘Gibson, Dave Brousson and Barrie Clark. There have been occasional boot-licking party hacks too, but North Vancouver may be unique in’sending more than its share of strong-willed, independent legislators to Victoria and Ottawa. 7 The feisty and energetic Ted White seems like a natural suc- cessor in this unusual political lineage. He’s even voted against. his party and his own personal beliets after determining, that COLONY BEDDING AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR © Mattresses, Box Springs & Bed Frames F © Sofa Beds & Roll Away Cots ® Quilts, Pillows & Pads ® Most sizes in stock for immediste delivery : # Ask about our FREE delivery, set up and ald bed removal service CHECK US OUT | / HUGE SELECTION v LOW WAREHOUSE PRICES ij] COLONY HOME FURNISHINGS 1075 Roosevelt Crescent North Vancouver (2 blocks behind Avaton Hotel) Open Daily Fri. 9-9, Sun 12-4 Friday, September 20, 1996 - North Shora News - 7 his constituents supported the federal government's gun con- trol legislation. His commitment to direct democracy is so strong that he will soon be introducing a bill in the House of Commons that would establish a workable law tor initiating citizen-based ref- erenda in Canada, Rased upon extensive research in jurisdictions that have successfully used referenda as a way of encouraging citizens te play a more active part in government, White’s proposed legis- lation is testimony to what an effective politician can accom- plish. It will be one of the most detailed and well-considered pri- vate members’ bills ever introduced in parliament and puts the provincial NDP’s bogus Recall and Initiative Act to shame. Ted White recently announced that he will be seeking re- election in the next federal campaign. During a period when the Reform Party of Canada’s star seems to Be iding, and with the Liberals and the NDP hoping to win in many B.C. ridings currently held by Reform MPs, it’s doubtful that White could easily be unseated. In fact, his strong record of constituency representation in North Vancouver makes him one of the best bets for re-election of any Reformer in our province. O00 A couple of weeks ago I wrote about Conservative /Socred Greg Lyle’s role in the provincial Liberal election campaign. I really wasn’t picking on Mr. Lyle; rather, I was attempting to. illustrate the unsettling fluidity in our politics today, where it’s often difficult to tell the players apart. There are plenty of other examples. For instance, last week it was reported that one of Liberal jeader Gordon Campbell’s key election organizers, Jim Arthur, was charged with trying to procure a prostitute. Campbell immediately distanced himself from Arthur, who was a senior Liberal strategist and “wagon master” of the election cam- paign tour. But the real story here is Jim Arthur's political resume. He was a B.C. organizer of Jean Charest’s run for the federal Tory leadership, an assistant to former Social Credit Premier Bill Bennett and an organizer of election campaign tours for Brian Mulroney and Kim Campbell. ; Some Liberal! No wonder the provincial Grits are dazed and confused. The North Shore News believes strongly in freedom of speech and the right of all sides in a debate to be heard. The calsmnists published in the News present differing points of view, but those views are not necessarily those uf the newspaper itself.
