Of the 15,000 entrants in the competition, 2.823 represented 159 B.C. schools. Of the 50 schools named to the honor roll, 28 were B.C. schools, said the ministry. The performance by B.C. students repre- sents the province’s best results in the compe- tition to date. The median score for students competing from B.C. in 1996 was eight points higher than the median score for other Canadian competi- tors. The annual competition is named for Euclid of Alexandria, a prominent Egyptian mathematician who Jived from 365 BC to 300 BC. Euclid is best known for his treatise on geometry, The Elements. Celebrating the ancient TODAY, June 21, is midsummers eve, the longest day of the year, and a time of celebration for many ancient cultures. VanDusen Botanical Garden wiill be the scene of a medieval celebration with battles, archery, music, costumes and pageantry on the great lawn from 7 to 9 p.m. The garden is located in Vancouver at the corner of Oak Street and 37th Avenue. The Society for Creative Anachronism will present an evening of medieval skills and fun. The knights in armor battling with heavy swords and the musketeer-style fencers are popular with children. Musicians will play courtly music while archers test their accuracy . Ladies and gentlemen will invite audience participation in tra- ditional dances, VanDusen’s hedge maze, which contains !,000 individual cedars placed in a circular pattern, will provide a challenge for all ages. Regular garden admission is $10 for families, $5 for adults and $2.50 for seniors and youth.
