Dear Editor: It is ironic that automotive columnist Greg Wilson complains about speed radar cameras’ invasion of privacy and civil liberties only Wwo pages after his lengthy “worship piece” on the Porsche 911 (Sept. 29). This is a car that yells “Look at me! Look at me!" on the streets and highways and, according to Wilson, c can hit a top speed of 270 kin/h. Wonderful. The privacy argument against speed radar cameras is a bit shaky when you consider that they focus on the licence plate displayed for all to see on a vehicle travelling on a public road in such a dangerous manner as to attract the attention of others. As to the civil liberties of speeding drivers, what about the violation of civil liberties for the nearly 200 people who dic each year in whole or in part because of speeding, or all of us who pay higher auto insurance premiums and taxes to take care of those injured? It might come as a surprise to Mr. Wilson that even though Ontario did just about everything that could be done wrong with speed radar cameras, public opinion polls still show 55% of Ontarians want them back. In West London, England, surveys of United Kingdom Auto Association members show 84% support, and they’ve had speed radar cameras there for years, There, as in Australia, New Zealand, and even in Germany, where speed radar cameras are used along the famous Autobahn, fatalities and injuries have been reduced. Here in B.C., two polls taken a year apart, report over 70% approval for the speed radar camera program that will be introduced in early 1996. Our camera units will be used only on stretches of streets and highways that are clearly made high-risk areas because of speeding. The public will . play. a major role in identifying those areas. _ The cameras will snap rear licence plates on vehicles clearly and unmis- takably being driven at an unreasonably high speed in 1 those high-risk areas. “This will not be “zero tolerance enforcement.” It has been said that.“‘conscience” is that little voice inside a person's head that says “someone might be watching.” © By greatly increasing the likelihood of apprehension, an effective speed Management’ program ‘combining conventional enforcement and speed ‘-tadar cameras will make that little voice a lot bigger. “The majority of British Columbians are saying, “It's about time.” Ken Hardie: _ Manager ICBC Public Affairs “Langara lauded _ Dear Editor: . fh “ Re: Column by’ Doug Collins Iam ‘writing’ to’ correct any doubts that readers of your paper may have regarding’ ihe . excel- ‘lence of the teaching and learning Process at Langara College.
