Unfortunately, the ugly leback” trunk design never ton and both companies even- dropped the weird design. er American cars from the at are on my design-blunder clude the unreliable Chevy imply designed Dodge Dart, liar Chrysler Cordoba, vertical- Mercury Cougar XR7, and of the compact to mid-sized from GM in the ‘80s. e Japanese cars weren't exact- lish either, when they were just ing to appear in mass num- in the ‘70s. The vulnerable RX-3, for example, looked cluttered and unsophisticated despite its technologically-advanced rotary engine nestled under its hood (which by the way became a repair night- mare story). The highly efficient Honda Civic’s humble, stumpy shape got no respect from the consumers in those days too; people just pointed at it and chuckled at its toy-like design. Even in the ‘80s, cars like the Subaru X'T “wedge™ coupe and choppy Nissan Pulsar proved that designers still make mistakes — major mistakes — when designing new vehicles. Europeans had their share of strange designs. The early *70s Fiats, Renaults and Saabs looked like they were designed by someone with absolutely no understanding of what’s handsome and what's not. Fortunately, Saab changed the design of its 900 models recently and now they fall under my “great design” list. Thanks to better marketing and design studies conducted nowadays, weird designs seem to have disap- peared, but some unexplainable ones still remain. Take the Chevy Caprice. ‘Though relatively handsume looking from the front, the bulky back and rear- quarter style caused the 1991 model to earn the nickname “whale”. Chevy cleaned up the design last year and incorporated a slimmer looking rear. The Buick Skylark (photo shown) is another one that seems to have escaped the corporate filtering process, I'm uot sure what the designers had in mind when they decided to stick a bird-like beak in the front of an awkward angled side profile, but | hope this is the last time we will see an offensive design from GM. The good news is that recent entries from GM, like the beautiful Buick Riviera and futuristic Olds Aurora, seem to indicate that GM designers are now ona roll. Life will be too boring if every- thing looks perfect anyway. urrently scheduled B.C. ferry sailings FOLLOWING are the cur- schedules for the B.C.
